I paint intuitively and responsively in relation to the piece of wood I am working on. I work directly onto the surface liking the immediacy of relationship between the wood and the paint.
Behind the response to the wood, are subjective, sensory responses, interactions with place, matter, light, memory.
The forms and shapes of landscape come instinctively. Landscape as a feeling, a reciprocal encounter and a state of mind, as much as a physical entity. Landscape as language.
I grew up in North Wales feeling a deep connection to the wild energy filled landscape. In Welsh, the word Hireath evokes the longing for and the depth of connection to the landscape.
"We experience the sensuous world only by rendering ourselves vulnerable to that world. Sensory perception is this ongoing interweavement: the terrain enters into us only to the extent that we allow ourselves to be taken up within that terrain.......
